Adult Sibling Project Funded by the Julia Farr McLeod Benevolent Fund
The initiative, which involves the development of written and web-based resources for adult siblings, aims to strengthen the relationships between people with special needs and their brothers or sisters. The sibling relationship is the longest of any. It usually lasts long after parents are able to care for a person with disabilities. Siblings can play a key role in the emotional and social health of the person with special needs. However sometimes these relationships can be strained or severed due to childhood difficulties.
If you would like to be involved in the project or receive email updates, please contact Kate Strohm at kate@siblingsaustralia.org.au To find out more about the Project download the DOCUMENTS IN RIGHT COLUMN. Included is a White Paper developed by the Sibling Leadership Network in the United States. Also the final report for the Project can be found in the list of documents to the right - it is called Adult Sibling Project Final Report April 2010 . We welcome feedback/comments on the findings.
Australian Sibling Support Scoping Project Funded by Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA)
Over the period April to August 2009, Siblings Australia mapped the current practices around Australia undertaken by the various organisations involved in sibling support programs. The aim of this research was to develop a greater understanding of the approaches and models currently being used, the evaluation which has been done, measures used for evaluation as well as enable us to identify gaps in support for siblings. The results of this research will be presented at the Siblings Australia conference in November 2009.
It is hoped that this research will assist in the development of standard evaluation measures for sibling support programs, shared policies and procedures between organisations, and the development of ‘best practice’ guidelines. In addition, our Directory of Services for Sibling Programs has been updated and made available online as a resource for service organisations, parents and siblings.
A copy of the Scoping Project report is now available for download from the RIGHT COLUMN. If you would like more information, or an update on this project please contact us.
