SibworkS Resources
Siblings of children with disabilities or chronic illness have particular needs themselves. They can feel quite isolated. Sibling groups allow these children to come together, have fun, share experiences and learn ways of dealing positively with challenges they face.

The manual and accompanying participant booklet outline a specific program for young siblings and is based on the collective experiences of the authors (Kate Strohm from Siblings Australia and Dr Monique Nesa from Curtin University) and service providers around Australia, as well as overseas.

Whilst the program has been primarily devised for siblings aged between 8 and 12 years, it can be adapted for other age groups.

The program runs for 6 sessions and has been written in detail to provide maximum benefits for facilitators and siblings in the groups. Furthermore, guidelines for running an information session for parents and raising parents’ awareness of siblings needs are provided.

Facilitator Manual Participant Booklet

Siblings: Brothers and sisters of children with special needs (2002) By Kate Strohm
Siblings tells what it is like to grow up with a sister or brother who has a disability or chronic illness. The siblings of children with special needs are often the overlooked ones in families struggling to cope.

Kate Strohm, an experienced health professional and journalist who has a sister with cerebral palsy, bravely shares the story of her journey from confusion and distress to greater understanding and acceptance. She also provides a forum for other siblings to describe their struggles with resentment, guilt, grief and isolation, their fears and also their joys.

Besides giving siblings a voice at last, Kate Strohm also provides strategies that siblings themselves, parents and practitioners can use to support brothers and sisters of children with special needs.
